CANmeleon Controller IC
Chengdu Kunhong Electronic Technology Co., Ltd.
Positioning
The CANmeleon controller IC is the hardware foundation of the CANmeleon general USB-CAN / CAN FD ecosystem. It provides a common controller architecture for IC-based products, board-level modules and finished CAN analyzers or adapters, while its protocol engine hosts different USB-CAN / CAN FD protocol applications.
It is not a general MCU that simply imitates several vendor protocols, nor does it require customers to rebuild a CAN device from FPGA logic. USB communication, CAN / CAN FD channel scheduling, buffering, protocol execution and device-management interfaces are integrated into one platform controller.
Architecture
| Layer | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| CANmeleon controller IC | USB-CAN / CAN FD control, channel resources and data scheduling |
| Protocol Engine | Runs protocol applications that connect to different software ecosystems |
| Device manager | Installs, updates and switches applications while maintaining device status |
This structure allows the same hardware to work with PCAN-View, CANoe, ZCANPRO, CANking, SocketCAN and other common drivers and tools through different protocol applications.
CANmeleon Protocol Engine
CANmeleon Protocol Engine is the protocol-processing core designed for USB-CAN / CAN FD. It coordinates USB host transfers, CAN / CAN FD frame parsing and packaging, concurrent multi-channel timing, buffering, bus-error statistics and the protocol-application runtime.
Rather than fixing a single vendor protocol in firmware, the engine provides a stable runtime for multiple applications. Compatible hardware can therefore install, update and switch applications throughout its service life.
Comparison with MCU and FPGA Designs
| Approach | Considerations |
|---|---|
| General MCU firmware | Easy to start, but multi-protocol maintenance, high CAN FD load and long-term consistency increase firmware complexity |
| FPGA logic | High performance ceiling, but longer development and verification cycles and a higher engineering threshold |
| CANmeleon controller IC | Platform controller, protocol engine and application ecosystem balance performance, scalable cost and iteration speed |
Key Advantages
Scalable Cost
The controller is optimized for USB-CAN / CAN FD products. A shared architecture can be reused across IC, board-level and finished-adapter product lines, reducing duplicated engineering and production work.
High Performance
The protocol engine is designed around multi-channel USB-CAN / CAN FD data paths, buffering and device-state management. It is suitable for high-load CAN FD acquisition and concurrent channel operation.
Efficient Secondary Development
New compatibility is delivered as protocol applications instead of repeated low-level firmware or FPGA redesign. Engineering effort can focus on the protocol and software ecosystem being added.
Longer Software Life
After hardware shipment, new protocol applications can continue to be published and installed through CANmeleon device manager and its application marketplace.
Ecosystem Role
The controller IC turns CAN hardware from a closed single-protocol device into a general platform capable of installing protocol applications. Hardware provides the common foundation, the protocol engine enables continued evolution, and the application marketplace connects changing software ecosystems.
