CANmeleon Device Manager User Guide

CANmeleon device manager

CANmeleon device manager is a Windows desktop tool for Kunhong CANmeleon / UCANFD-G2 devices. It helps users connect devices, inspect device information, manage installed applications, update application releases, update the device manager itself, and handle basic recovery workflows.

When To Use It

  • Connect a device for the first time and confirm that Windows can detect it.
  • Check device model, application version, manager protocol version, bootloader version, channel count, and application slots.
  • Install, replace, or update device applications.
  • Switch the running application or uninstall applications that are no longer needed.
  • Check application release updates and device manager software updates.
  • Handle devices that enumerate as an update drive.

Download And Install

Installation Steps

  1. Download CANmeleon-device-manager-win64.zip.
  2. Extract the zip package to a fixed directory.
  3. Run CANmeleon-device-manager.exe.
  4. Connect the CANmeleon / UCANFD-G2 device to a USB port.

TIP

Do not run the executable directly inside the zip viewer. Extract the full package first so that the updater, driver DLLs, and bundled files stay in the expected directory layout.

Quick Start

1. Select A Device

After startup, the tool opens the Select device page. The device table shows the detected devices and their status:

CANmeleon device manager select device page

StatusMeaningRecommended Action
ReadyThe device can be openedSelect it and click Connect
Recovery modeThe device is already in update-drive modeClick Open recovery or reconnect the device
Driver not installedWindows cannot find a usable driverInstall the driver and click Refresh
UnavailableThe device is busy or cannot be openedClose other software that may be using it

If the device is not listed automatically, click Refresh. For plug-and-unplug testing, enable Auto scan and choose a scan interval.

2. Connect

Select a device with the Ready status, then click Connect. After a successful connection, the main window opens.

If connection fails, check:

  • Whether the USB cable and port are reliable.
  • Whether another CAN tool or debugger is using the device.
  • Whether Windows Device Manager reports a driver problem.
  • Whether the selected device supports the CANmeleon management workflow.

3. Read Device Information

Open the Device page and click Refresh info. Common fields include:

  • Device: current device name.
  • PID: product identification.
  • Application version: currently running application version.
  • Manager protocol: device management interface version.
  • Bootloader version: bootloader version.
  • Device type, Channels, Application slots, and Installed application.

Application Management

The Application management page shows the device application slots and the available application catalog.

Refresh Slots

  1. Open Application management.
  2. Click Refresh.
  3. Check the Installed applications on device area.

A slot can be shown as:

  • Running: the application currently running on the device.
  • Empty: no application is installed in this slot.
  • Disabled: this slot is not available.

Install Or Replace An Application

  1. Select an available slot in Installed applications on device.
  2. Click Change/update app.
  3. In the dialog, choose the target release and application card.
  4. Confirm the selection and return to Application management.
  5. Review the pending changes, then click Apply changes.
  6. Wait for the update to finish and reconnect the device if it re-enumerates.

WARNING

Do not unplug the device or close the tool while an application update is running. The device may disconnect and enumerate again after the update; this is expected.

Update Installed Applications

If the local application release contains newer versions for the applications already installed on the device, use Update installed apps:

  1. Connect the device and refresh the slot list.
  2. Select the target firmware package version in Application Catalog.
  3. Click Update installed apps.
  4. The tool prepares the pending updates that are valid for the device.
  5. Click Apply changes, wait for the device to restart, and reconnect.

If the tool reports that the updatable slots are not contiguous, update the slots one by one as prompted.

Run Or Uninstall Applications

  • Run app: switches the device to the selected slot. The device may re-enumerate and require reconnecting.
  • Uninstall: removes the application from the selected slot.
  • Uninstall all apps: removes all maintenance-safe application entries. The device skips the currently running application.

Refresh the slot list after uninstalling applications.

Application Catalog And Release Updates

Application Catalog displays available application releases, application cards, and install status:

  • Installable: this application can be installed on the current device.
  • Not applicable: this application does not match the current device or state.
  • Check required: read device information before the tool can decide.

If no local application release is available, the tool attempts to download the latest release. You can also click Check update or Re-download in the application release update area.

Device Operations

Mode Switch

On the Device page, if the connected device supports multiple modes, choose a target mode in the Mode switch area and click Switch mode. The device may re-enumerate after switching; reconnect it when prompted.

Termination Resistor

Some hardware supports software-controlled termination resistors. Confirm that the current hardware supports this feature before changing settings:

  1. Open the Device page and find Termination resistor.
  2. Click Refresh status.
  3. Adjust the channel settings according to the bus wiring.
  4. Click Apply settings.

Do not use this feature on hardware that does not support controllable termination resistors.

Enter Upgrade Mode

Clicking Enter upgrade disconnects the current session and enumerates the device as an update drive. Use this only for update or recovery workflows, and make sure no communication or update task is running.

Software Updates

Application Release Update

Application release updates provide newer device application packages. The tool checks automatically on startup, and you can check manually:

  1. Connect the device.
  2. Check the application release update message in Application management.
  3. Click Check update or Re-download.
  4. After downloading, select the application changes and click Apply changes.

Device Manager Update

The device manager can update itself:

CANmeleon device manager software update page

  1. Open the Software page.
  2. In Device manager update, click Check update.
  3. If a newer version is available, click Download and restart to install.
  4. The tool closes, starts the updater, replaces the files, and restarts.

Device Recovery

When a device is already in update-drive mode, the device list shows Recovery mode. You can:

  • Unplug and reconnect the device first to see whether it returns to normal operation.
  • If Kunhong technical support provides a recovery application package, click Open recovery, choose the update drive and the recovery package, then click Write recovery package.

After writing the recovery package, wait for the device to restart, return to the device list, and scan again.

Troubleshooting

Device Not Found

  • Confirm that the USB cable supports data transfer.
  • Try another USB port and click Refresh.
  • Check Windows Device Manager for unknown devices or driver errors.
  • Close other software that may be using the device.

Driver Not Installed

Install the required driver, reconnect the device, and click Refresh. If the problem remains, check the device status and driver provider in Windows Device Manager.

Connection Failed

This is usually caused by device occupation, driver problems, or an unsupported device state. Close other tools, reconnect the device, and try again.

Application Catalog Is Empty

  • Confirm that the PC can access the release server.
  • Click Check update or Re-download.
  • For offline environments, use the application release package provided by Kunhong technical support.

Application Shows Not Applicable

Installability depends on the device model, device state, and application release. Click Refresh info and Refresh first. If it still shows Not applicable, choose a matching application or contact technical support.

Device Disconnects After Update

Application installation, mode switching, and upgrade mode can make the device re-enumerate. Wait a few seconds, reconnect the device if needed, return to Select device, and click Refresh.
